Practical notes

  • Location beats size: a small room near a station or wharf saves more time than a big room far away.
  • Parking: many central hotels charge A$40–80 a night; you rarely need a car.
  • Check-in: usually from 2–3pm; most hotels store luggage.
  • Apartments: serviced apartments with kitchens suit families and longer stays.
  • Cancellation: flexible rates cost a little more but are worth it for peak periods.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Sydney for first-time visitors?

The Rocks and Circular Quay, for walking access to the Opera House, the bridge and the ferries. The CBD is a cheaper alternative a few minutes away.

Is it better to stay in Bondi or the city?

Stay in the city for sightseeing and transport, and in Bondi if beach time matters most. Bondi is about 30–40 minutes from the CBD by train and bus.

How far ahead should I book a Sydney hotel?

Two to three months ahead for summer, and six months or more for New Year's Eve or Mardi Gras. Outside peaks, a few weeks is usually enough.

Where should I stay for Western Sydney Airport?

Parramatta or Penrith are the nearest larger centres with a range of hotels; WSI is about 50 km from the CBD.

Are Sydney hotel prices per room or per person?

Almost always per room per night, including GST. Check whether breakfast is included.

Is Darling Harbour a good place to stay?

Yes for families and convenience, with many big hotels; it is less atmospheric than The Rocks but well connected.
