Best time to visit Sydney: seasons, weather and events

Month-by-month weather, the season that suits you, and the big events of 2026–27 — New Year's Eve, Sydney Festival, Mardi Gras, Vivid Sydney and whale season.

01

Sydney's seasons

Seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere. Summer (December–February) is warm to hot and humid, with afternoon storms, school holidays and peak prices. Autumn (March–May) brings settled, warm days and warm sea — many locals' favourite time. Winter (June–August) is mild and often sunny, with cool nights. Spring (September–November) warms up quickly, with jacaranda blossom in October and November.

Sydney rarely gets extreme cold, but heatwaves above 35°C do happen in summer, and heavy rain can arrive at any time of year, especially in late summer and autumn.

Which season suits you

  • Beach holiday: late December to March, when the sea is warmest — but book early.
  • Walking and sightseeing: March–May and September–November.
  • Budget: May to August (outside Vivid weekends) and early December.
  • Whales: roughly June to November.
  • Festivals: January (Sydney Festival), February–March (Mardi Gras), late May–June (Vivid).
03

New Year's Eve

Sydney's fireworks over the Harbour Bridge and Opera House are among the most watched in the world, with a family display at 9pm and the main show at midnight. Popular foreshore vantage points fill up early in the day; some areas are ticketed, and many are alcohol-free. Hotels with views sell out months ahead and often require minimum stays.

Plan transport carefully: road closures are extensive and trains, ferries and buses run special timetables. A harbour cruise is the most comfortable — and most expensive — way to watch.

04

Summer and autumn events

Sydney Festival fills January with theatre, music and free outdoor events; 2027 dates are to be confirmed on the official site. Australia Day (26 January) is a public holiday with harbour events; for many First Nations people it is a day of mourning, and events such as WugulOra and Yabun reflect that. Lunar New Year brings celebrations around Chinatown in January or February.

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival runs in late February and early March, ending with the famous parade along Oxford Street — next on Saturday 6 March 2027 (check the official programme). The Sydney Royal Easter Show at Sydney Olympic Park is a big family day out.

05

Winter and spring events

Vivid Sydney, the festival of light, music and ideas, runs from 28 May to 19 June 2027, transforming the Opera House, Circular Quay and Darling Harbour after dark. It is free to walk around but extremely crowded on weekends; go on a weeknight and book dinner or cruises early.

Whale watching peaks over winter and spring. The City2Surf fun run to Bondi is usually held in August, and Sculpture by the Sea lines the Bondi–Tamarama clifftops in late October and early November. On 26 December the Sydney to Hobart yacht race starts from the harbour.
